So fasten your seatbelts and get ready to embark on a virtual tour as I share the highlights of my recent escapade to Fukuoka, Hakata, Kurume, Okagaki, Nagasaki, and Kumamoto.
Day 1: Hakata
Embracing Tradition and Flavorful Delights Our journey kicked off in the heart of Hakata, where a fusion of ancient traditions and modern charm awaited us. We wasted no time and headed straight to the iconic Hakata Tower, where panoramic views of the city unfolded before our eyes. Afterward, we embarked on a delightful boat ride, gliding along the serene waters to catch a glimpse of Hakata Tower's majestic reflection. Our taste buds were treated to an explosion of flavors at the famous Ramen Stadium in Canal City, where we savored a steaming bowl of authentic Hakata Ramen. As the sun began to set, we strolled through the enchanting Yatai (food stalls) lining the streets, immersing ourselves in the lively atmosphere and indulging in local delicacies. We also took a moment to admire the serene beauty of the nearby temple, offering a tranquil respite from the vibrant energy of the city.
Day 2: Kurume
Sake, Serenity, and Scenic Walks Our journey led us to the charming city of Kurume, renowned for its traditional sake breweries and serene landscapes. We immersed ourselves in the art of sake-making, exploring the local breweries, and tasting a variety of exquisite brews. With our spirits lifted, we set out on foot to explore Kurume's picturesque streets, meandering through quaint neighborhoods, and admiring the traditional architecture. The city's tranquil ambiance and friendly locals made every step a joyous discovery.
Day 3: Okagaki
Sushi and Cycling Adventures Next on our itinerary was the delightful town of Okagaki, where delectable sushi awaited our eager palates. We indulged in the freshest fish and expertly crafted sushi rolls, savoring the delicate flavors of this culinary art form. To explore the town further, we rented bicycles, gliding through scenic paths and discovering hidden gems at our own pace. Pedaling through Okagaki's charming streets offered a unique perspective and allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the local culture.
Day 4: Nagasaki
A Tale of Resilience and Reflection Our journey took us to Nagasaki, a city steeped in history and marked by its resilient spirit. We paid homage to the 26 Martyrs, a poignant reminder of Nagasaki's enduring faith. We learned about the history of Christianity in Japan and the immense trials and persecution they endured.
The enduring spirit of Nagasaki continued to be ever present as we made our way to the Atomic Bomb Museum and Peace Park. We were provided a somber yet necessary reflection on the tragic events of the past, urging us to cherish peace and promote understanding and love. Our hearts ached to see to incredible loss and devastation that war can bring. With in the halls of the Atomic Bomb Museum, there is a chain of origami cranes just like the one in the book Sadako which is known as a symbol of good fortune, longevity, and peace.
Ending our visit, we ascended to the top Inasayama, witnessing breathtaking panoramic views of Nagasaki. The plan was to take the ropeway from the city to the top of the mountain but plans were diverted when we found out the ropeway was closed for maintenance, this happens once a year, so instead we opted to take the bus to Inasayama park and then took a memorable ride on the iconic slope car to a 360 degree observatory. We went during the day but school was still in session. It looks like the park gets crowded
Day 5: Kumamoto
Our fifth day led us to the enchanting city of Kumamoto, where a symbol of rich heritage awaited us—Kumamoto Castle. As we approached the castle grounds, its magnificence took our breath away. We embarked on a captivating exploration, immersing ourselves in its storied past and marveling at the architectural splendor that stood before us. Every step revealed a new facet of this historical gem, leaving us in awe of the craftsmanship and the resilience it represents.
Beyond the castle walls, Kumamoto had more in store for us. We couldn't resist a visit to the delightful zoo, where a world of fascinating creatures awaited. Among the diverse array of wildlife, we found ourselves particularly captivated by the playful and adorable red pandas. Their charming antics and endearing presence brought smiles to our faces, creating cherished memories that would last a lifetime.
To complete our Kumamoto experience, we made a special stop at the fountain located in the heart of the city's train station. Known as the Kumamoto water fountain, it is said to offer pure, refreshing water. With cups in hand, we indulged in a sip of this renowned water, not only to quench our thirst but also to partake in a symbolic act that connects us to the spirit of Kumamoto.
Day 5 in Kumamoto left an indelible mark on our journey, as we immersed ourselves in history, connected with nature's wonders, and embraced the essence of this remarkable city.
